Introducing Dr Rashi Parker

I am passionate about protecting the taonga (treasures) of West Auckland— both our nature and our people.

When my partner and I moved to Glen Eden, we immediately bonded with the birdlife, trees, and community. In 11 years of calling Glen Eden home, I have had the privilege of connecting with many amazing locals. Our catch-ups at the train station, library, parks, and playgrounds all return to common concerns about looking after nature and each other.

I want to represent this voice for Glen Eden on the Portage Licensing Trust, so that our diverse community’s aspirations are supported, and empowered, through this social enterprise.

My background is a combination of academia and community work. After completing a PhD in Neuroscience, I worked as an academic researcher at the University of Auckland, investigating how brain circuits develop, and training upcoming neuroscientists.

I was motivated to work more heavily in conservation through my child, and her inquisitive questions about our world. Currently, I work in fundraising and advocacy for BirdCare Aotearoa and the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. This includes collaborating with conservation groups, schools, businesses, local and central government, to raise awareness and protections for our taonga.

I also serve in leadership roles for community organisations. Since 2019, I have been on the committee for the West Auckland Community Toy Library. I secured funding for a wheel-chair accessible ramp, and many of the library’s musical instruments and microscopes from the Waitākere Ranges local board. It is an honour to campaign with the Future West candidates who support the library’s mahi!

Beyond West Auckland, I have been on the tertiary awards committee for the Kate Edger Foundation since 2015, and was invited to join the charity’s governing board, enabling women to pursue higher education. Through all these roles, I know of the tireless dedication behind community groups, but also the challenging funding environment.

With your vote for the Portage Licensing Trusts, I will voice growing support for initiatives that enhance nature, youth, and strengthen our wonderful westie community.
